<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I have been extracting color from plant materials lately but haven't</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">tried printing on fabric. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I found some Gum Tree leaves lying on the ground several weeks</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">the leaves down and then folded over.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I used cotton bamboo yarn to wrap and tie.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">at some eco dye blogs; I had found a couple </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">eco dyeing fabric around a veggie can</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br />using various methods.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br />So I thought that I would try one.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I had used the skin and the pit of an</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">avocado in a pot (stainless steel) and</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">covered with (tap) water. Heated for</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">about 2 hours and left overnight.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">No modifier was added to the dye bath.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">The cotton fabric that I used was </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">treated with alum.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I have to say again that I'm not an</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">expert; I'm just playing and learning</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">along the way.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">And I forgot to take photos of the can</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">once it was wrapped.</span></span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"> I placed the fabric over the can</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">and placed yellow onions skins around.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I then wrapped Bamboo crochet yarn all</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">around the can - tightly. </span></span>(it's all that I had to wrap)<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">The can was placed into the avocado dye</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">bath and heated (not boiled) for about</span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">coming back and turning it. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">When I unwrapped it I found it had </span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">skins covered the rest. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">We call them tin cans but when I googled</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">to see what our veggie cans are made </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">of I found this:</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.keenforgreen.com/recycle/are_vegetable_cans_recyclable">http://www.keenforgreen.com/recycle/are_vegetable_cans_recyclable</a> </span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">"Veggie cans are made from steel (though </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">often referred to as "tin cans" because </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">there is a very thin coating of aluminum on </span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">the inside). </span></span>"<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">Don't have the link to this:</span></span><br />

The tin is there to stop the food from reacting with the can itself<br /> (Steel cans with compromised tin platings can rust, leading to iron oxide contaminating the food, which makes it taste awful; this is<br /> why dented/bent cans are usually on discount, due to their shortened shelf-life)."</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">Now the reason I looked this up was</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">because of my next experiment with </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">the can</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br />This is a new veggie can that I had</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">just opened a couple of days before -</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">it's not old. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">There are no onion skins just one leaf</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">that I laid on the fabric and folded </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">over and then wrapped around the can</span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">around the can and fabric and tied. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">You can see the yarn marks on this one.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">But look at all of the blackish color</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">lines and marks - from the can itself.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">Interesting... no? I know very little</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">chemistry so I can't technically explain</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">it. </span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">and that I learned something from therefore</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">it's not a failure.</span></span><br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">black spots also have some deep purple</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">colors. Lots of little things going on</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">in there.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I'm thinking that I'm going to try</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">this method again.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I also have more avocado fabric to show</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">but I'll do that during the week.</span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">chestnuts in the oven in my Corning</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">ware pie dish - with a little water.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">When the timer went off; I removed </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">the dish and discovered that the water</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">was brownish. oooh</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I wondered if I could dye some fabric</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">with the shells...?</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I searched google to see if anyone</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">had tried using the shells and to see</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">what they used and if they had good</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">results. - I couldn't find anything. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">So... I put the shells in my stainless</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">steel pot and warmed the water (not boil-</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">Also, I used my tap water) </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">for about 1 hour and I started to see </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">some color. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">Impatient that I am; I put a small piece</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">of fabric (already soaked in alum) in the</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">pot with the shells. </span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I left it in the pot overnight.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I removed the fabric - nice color!</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">My last post on this shrub (I promise)</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">Mostly photos of the results </span></span><br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I have to hurry and collect all of the</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">berries that I possibly can with the</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">cold weather approaching they are being</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">to shrivel. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I put the berries in the stainless</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">steel pot and covered with my tap</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">water (which is hard). I added one</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">teaspoon of alum and let it simmer</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">not boil for one hour then let it</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">sit.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I forgot to take photos! ugh</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I used 100% cotton fabric - one half</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">yard (no weighing) boiled it and added </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">1 teas. washing soda and 1 teas. alum. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">But here's the color in the jar...</span></span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">Looks like a light orange. I let it</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">sit in the jar for about 5 days -</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">continually stirring it around.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">Trying not to get too excited with</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">the lovely color because we know</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">by now - what you see is NOT what</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">you get!</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I took the fabric out and rinsed it</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">in luke warm water and not surprising</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">the color came out and I would say </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">it's a light beige. booo</span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">So now I get this brainstorm! What if...</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I put the liquid left from the leaves</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">and the liquid left from the berries</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">and see what happens.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I took one cup of the leaves liquid</span></span><br />
<br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"> and added one cup of the berry liquid.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">The cotton fabric boiled in soda ash</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">and alum, rinsed and put in the jar </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">with the berry/leaves liquid mix.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"> Fabric soaked for about</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">3 days. Dried the fabric and rinsed</span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">What's so great about these plants</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">is that they self seed. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">Those little pods you see hanging</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">contain the seeds. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">About 2 weeks ago I started saving</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">some of these seeds for my daughter</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">to plant in her garden. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">Looking at the Cleomes; I wondered if I</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">could extract any dye from the purple </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">colored flowers.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">But first I google them to make sure</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">they are safe and not poisonous in </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">any way. Surprisingly, I found that</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">they are called an Herb and used</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">medicinally! This is truly an amazing</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">and versatile plant! </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">To my amazement I didn't find through</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">my google search anyone who had used</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">this plant for dyeing. Not that I could</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">find with photos anyway. </span></span><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I won't be able to do this experiment again</span></span><br />

<i><b><span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">I hope that someone who is more experienced</span></span></b></i><br />

<br />
<i><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"> </span><span style="font-size: large;">" If you boil it down enough, you end up with a black syrup, quite thick,
which acts as a binding agent for pigments, ideal for painting on

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i>" Native American recipes in fact have Cleome cooked, most frequently
boiled, often eaten like spinach, or the seeds, which are often eaten
raw, boiled into a porridge-like mush. Seeds are also sometimes ground
into a flour or meal, and has been used for bread since prehistoric
times."</i></span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">cloth that was dyed with beets. However, after going</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">to the web page </span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">I discovered that the photo was</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">taken <u>before </u>it was washed. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">So, I decided to give it a go anyway. I had to</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">satisfy my curiosity. I bought fresh beets and</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">only peeled a large one. I hate wasting food.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">I did not take step by step photos - I forgot!</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">I remembered as I had the pieces soaking</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">in the sink.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.stephennottingham.co.uk/beetroot5.htm">Beetroot</a></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"> "Cut beetroot retains its purple-red colour well in acidic solutions such as malt vinegar (acetic acid)." </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">But they didn't mean on fabric! (but I tried it anyway)</span></span><br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6k7E0BO63Cwq6ejh9yVa1sF6BLigzB94_1Xr5JcYfeFKTKG71FCI7C7KB59Nl1TicHiJYJkuGVoYsPwPJ8DFTYdzCBIABJiCZPiM4mTx_KyUUTtV75GIZje5Xo8F-EkuT2rvRaDNBdnE/s1600/BeetsVinegar.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6k7E0BO63Cwq6ejh9yVa1sF6BLigzB94_1Xr5JcYfeFKTKG71FCI7C7KB59Nl1TicHiJYJkuGVoYsPwPJ8DFTYdzCBIABJiCZPiM4mTx_KyUUTtV75GIZje5Xo8F-EkuT2rvRaDNBdnE/s1600/BeetsVinegar.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"> Needless to say, the color washed out.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Leaving this ecru color. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">The conclusion -</span></span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">"There have been repeated attempts to use beetroot as a natural dye for textiles.....</span></span></i><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i> . The red colour of beetroot cannot be fixed with any of the mordants traditionally used in textile dying. A method of obtaining a colour-fast red dye from beetroot would enable it to be exploited as a natural textile dye." </i></span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">do it!</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I put about 3 cups of berries and 3 cups of distilled</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">water in a pot.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">I only use this pot for plants. (I'm really not sure</span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">I don't boil - just heat for about 20 min. </span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">or only the fabric? I added about 1 teas. of alum</span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">about the tubberware on the table. About 3 or 4 </span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">(I forgot to takes photos!~)</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">But this is what the fabric looked like when dried.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">this one again with a larger piece. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">with both <i>Pebeo Setacolor paint</i></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i>and Dylon Dyes. Separately - </i></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">I really am happy with the results.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">So, I decided to try an experiment -</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">I dyed the sateen first and purposely</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">left some white space - wash, dried,</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">and ironed. I used "Intense Violet"</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Then - and this is the test - I painted</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">on setacolor "Lemon Yellow".</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">The purpose of this test was to see </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">if the paint covered or over shadowed</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">the dye or just covered the white space.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">I'm sad to said that it covered the dye and</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">made the Intense Violet look faded.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">You can see the results</span></span><br />
